What a Retailer Reference Price Really Means
A price marked “40% off” compares two numbers. To understand the saving, you need to know what those numbers describe. Goodfind uses a retailer’s current price and reference price for the same available variant. The comparison is useful, but it has limits.
How the markdown is calculated
Subtract the current price from the retailer reference price to find the dollar difference. Divide that difference by the reference price, then multiply by 100 to find the percentage. For example, a $30 current price against a $50 reference price is $20 less, or 40% below reference. This is an illustration, not a live offer.
A reference price is not price history
The reference value may be MSRP, a suggested selling price, or a retailer comparison value. It can also represent the separate prices of items in a bundle. Without a recorded history, you cannot tell whether the product sold recently at that amount. Goodfind does not currently track historical lows and does not label retailer reference prices as a verified previous selling price.
Keep bundles and variants separate
A bundle can have a large stated markdown because its reference value adds several individual items. List what is included, decide which pieces you need, and compare their current alternatives. The same caution applies to product sizes and configurations. A discount on a selected color, size, or keyboard configuration does not establish the discount for other variants.
Why the largest percentage may not save you the most
A 50% markdown on a $10 reference price is a $5 difference. A 20% markdown on a $100 reference price is a $20 difference. Neither comparison tells you which item is better for your needs. Goodfind lets you sort by largest markdown, dollars saved, or current price so you can compare from different angles.
What Goodfind verifies
The scanner checks selected US storefront catalogs, verifies the storefront currency, and pairs the current and reference prices of an available variant. A listing must show at least a 10% markdown to qualify. Stores that are restricted, unavailable, or do not have a verified USD storefront are skipped. Scans check up to 200 products per store and refresh at most every 15 minutes while the site is open.
What to confirm before checkout
Check the selected variant, final price, shipping, tax, stock, and offer conditions directly at the retailer. Goodfind does not establish the lowest price across stores, guarantee stock after a scan, or process purchases. Our online deal comparison checklist walks through the remaining checks.
